   • I'm slightly concerned that Myspace, that stalwart provider of previously accessible and easy-to-use band websites, has gone absolutely to shit.
     
     Really hard to navigate it now and posting a gig has turned into a really badly organised Facebook Event rip-off.
     
     It could just be that I do a lot of my Myspace maintenance at work, and our knackered ancient browsers simply cannot cope. But I'm pretty sure its golden era is over.
     
     Stop me if this is old news, I'm not really one for technology. It's a shame Facebook never managed to develop a successful, legitimate rival, cos that'd be by far the better option.

   • Aye it's become a pointless ball ache...unfortunately although it's a pain to update and navigate it still seems to be the main one people look to for bands. I did hear a rumour they were planning to charge people to use it...that'd kill it.
     
     Anyone got any suggestions for alternatives?

   • Keep using it until it's totally dead. So many people will still search for you on MySpace and they know where to look on the page to hear your music and look for your gigs.
     
     If you've got a reasonably unique band name you'll also get high ranking search results on google.
     
     They recently rolled out profile updates for normal accounts to make them more like Facebook but they've been so quiet for ages I think they must be working on something major.
     
     It is utter shit though.

   • Yeah, the only things that keep me using it are the easy-to-find URL and Google action, plus the fact that I've had it for ages and have amassed a fair old view count.
     
     That said, my play count is half the number of visitors, so perhaps people aren't quite as keen once they get there, haha.

     That's happened since they stopped the auto play of a track when the page opens...it's the same with our page so I can figure if people just hit the page then hit the add friend thing to get more friends (I don't even see our friend requests now they just automatically accept...dunno how that happened!!!) or if it's people coming back to look for news/gigs...etc but not bothering to listen to tracks they already have. We seem to get 50-60 hits most days and I don't know where they're coming from and we don't appear to get that many friend requests so beats me.

    • Basically a good idea done very poorly. Also part of Rupert Murdoch's empire, therefore tainted by the stench of an utter cuntoid.
      
      I use it and will continue to use it for the band for reasons already mentioned but it drives me up the wall.
      I wasted the best part of an hour yesterday tryiong to upload some pics that it wouldn't accept.
      The number of generic spam monkeys seems to be growing exponentially.
      
      Only thing I'd add in its favour is that it's less shit than facebook

    • The only messages we get most of the time on there are people with adverts for studios or bots, great fun, and Rob, completely agree, the new system for adding gigs is a total pile of arse. Nothing is clear on there any more and your homepage when you login now looks like a tweenagers room, status updates, friends, applications, invites, all shite. They should do a trimmed version for bands or just fuck off basically.

    • They're just lucky that "ilike" on FB never really got off the ground. Myspace still owns this field, but only because there is no challenge, even last.fm doesn't have that ease of accessibility, tunes to listen to and easy google searches.
      
      Even as a non-band-member this website has gone so far backwards in the last 5 years that it's enough to make my face hurt. It used to be so easy, with useful features, now they seem to have taken all feedback and done the opposite.

    • It needs a proper trim...lose the comments to avoid spam, apply some sort of junk filter to mail to fend off the spam, make events easier to post and promote (ie, don't disable location searches if you have more than 3,000 friends), reinstate the friend acceptance thing...blah blah blah.

      Not sure how the settings/ defaults work but we still have to accept friend requests. No idea how that came to be...if you can be arsed to go round in circles for a few hours you might be able to sort it.

      So it penalises you for having a lot of friends...like not being able to invite people to events by location. Maybe they could find the capacity to do that if they got rid of the spam fest that is the comments page.

    • I must say I still use a lot to listen to music. The new events inputting is a nightmare and generally it's too unwieldy and the pages vvary too much.
      
      The charging thing is a myth I think but I did hear they are having issues with the amount of illegally uploaded tracks.
      
      I also heard the lost half their users in the last 6 months. When you think about how long it's been dying for that is pretty serious. Big changes coming I'm sure...

    • For many years it has been the first place you would go to listen to music by a band you had just heard about, as you could almost guarantee that they would a) have a myspace page and b) have some music on it.
      
      For me, Spotify has pretty much taken over on that front.
      
      It still has a place today as people generally know exactly where they will find music and where they will find tour dates. I would prefer it if they just made the whole thing slicker and personally I'd be happy for them to scrap all the customisation stuff too as most pages just look a mess.
