Releasing music

    • I wrote a blog post about releasing your own music based on my experiences releasing our album. It's a long post so only read if you've got the time but I'd love to know what people thought, especially those that have been involved in releasing music themselves. I wanted it to be a sort of checklist for anyone that's never done it before.

    • its very good and very accurate

    • I've never released anything or ever likely to, but it seems to cover all bases and was pretty interesting.

    • Thanks guys. I wanted it to be the kind of thing I wish I had access to when I started so tried to cover all the gritty details.

    • That's a brilliant read, very informative
    • MORRELLMORRELL
    • Yeah good article. I for one will be getting that album.

    • Good artical man... have a more through read soon. Bit confused on spotify though can you now as a small label upload your stuff on there?
    • WickedWesticleWickedWesticle
    • I think as a label you need to contact them direct and see what the score is as they do work with some indie labels.

You may also be able to use something like DittoMusic - I have a feeling they have a Spotify only package but I haven't used them and can't vouch for how good they are. If they're any good you should be able to provide your own UPC and ISRCs pay whatever they charge and they'll push it to Spotify.

    • I'll try em... I'm with Tunecore but couldn't see anything about spotify with them though. I'll contact them direct I think. All helps with the war effort I guess.
    • WickedWesticleWickedWesticle
    • Yeah TuneCore don't do Spotify at the mo.

    • Great write up.

I took a slightly different route with Withered Hand. Made up my own label (strictly for releasing stuff from bands I played in). I was lucky enough to have a random meeting with Dean Berry and he hooked me up with a distribution deal with shellshock. Only thing with that is you have to use glass masters instead of CD-R.

Aside from that bit, all the rest rings true. No excuse at all for not doing it yourself.

    • Cool.

Are distribution deals like that exclusive or are they worldwide so it doesn't matter?
    • mikemike
    • I'd advise just not bothering to release music at all.

To tell you the truth I have no idea! Never been bothered to ask, but they do export sales for us. Occasionally I get a cheque. As long at that happens I don't bother asking too many questions.

    • heh. If I occasionally got cheques in the post I sure as hell wouldn't ask any questions either!

      Oof. Bad tour?

I'm going out with all guns blazing for my album and a couple of download singles and I don't care how much money I waste!

Rob that feeling wears off quickly. Nice while it lasts though!

    • Not great, not awful but has made me question the point of playing live, will soon fade though I'm sure.

I read it, I liked it, I like your style, looking forward to hearing the fruits

    • I'm currently not sure about tunecore... I know people have bought my album on itunes and stuff recently and they are telling me I've made 1 dollar. I'd love to get some distrobution on the LP... but get the feeling people like cargo aren't that up for distroing vinyl so much now.
