A problem

    • GarethGareth
    • Does anyone else have the problem of not being able to start when writing songs etc? I have riff ideas but only seem to get a very small percentage of them worked out properly and it's been ages since I wrote a song. I tried to write something for the Flatlands blog and scrapped about half an hours worth of work because I couldn't focus on what I was trying to achieve or what I was trying to say.

blogs are designed for people who have balls all to say but still expect the world to care.

    • oh and as my nan used to say, if you've got nothing good to say, don't say anything at all

    • i just play and sing random stuff till it comes into place. Or at band jams I sing out loud complete rubbish till i get some words

    • Edward Albee once said, "I write to find out what I'm thinking about." I always take that to mean that if it doesn't start to take shape pretty quickly, I'm probably not thinking about much worth saying.

I never seem to have much worth saying though. It's frustrating.

    • Free writing is awesome. I do it for script ideas. It's best as soon as you wake up. Just write without thinking and ideas can be adapted later.

    • haha, if i did that all my scripts would start, "yawn, scratch balls"

Thats not really true is it? There are ones that I can read all day on the Guardian website and they have masses of discussion as a follow up, so people do care about some of them.

Some are rubbish yeah, theres a tonne of stuff out there thats never been read because its crap, much like music I suppose.

    • starting a songs the hardest i find. oh finishing it is really hard too. the middle bits kind of flow easily (ish...) if im feeling inspired. if im miserable i dont write any good music at all.

    • I usually start lyrics with a phrase I might hear that sounds like a good title then work up an idea around that.

    • To answer G's question, I find you should only probably write if you have a clear aim, I tend to wander if I don't have something clear in mind before I start, see my dissertation for an idea of how NOT to write at length.

Lyrics wise, a concept to begin with is the best way, phrases, ideas and tangents come out of them, I find it quite easy to write lyrics.

    • I find some days are better writing days than others... my current trick seems to be write stuff I can't actually play then spend the next month working out how to play it properly... main problem seems to be transition from riffs... but lyrically I find I'm getting ideas in the wierdest places mainly on buses and trains... I write better while in motion. But yeah everybody has dry spells.

    • I'm always listening out for silly things people say as that can spark a whole load of ideas, sometimes phrases will pop into my head then I have to figure out what they mean or write a story around them. Sometimes I do what Jack does and just sing random phrases that fit the melody and sometimes a lyrical idea will come from that. Sometimes I'll even write a set of lyrics but when I sing them one of the guys will mishear what I'm singing and what they think I'm saying is better than what I'm actually saying so it sticks.

its very true, blogs (with the exception of a very select few, generally run by paid journalists on matters they work on anyway) appeal to those facebook / myspace users who continually post twaddle because they are so full of them selves they cant understand why anyone would not want to hear about them selves.
