When a debut album contains tracks like the mind blowing “Ride Of The Antichrist” and the ‘groovy ‘n’ bitch-y’ “Witchy Woman” then it could not but to be considered as a total success. The quartet from the four corners of the UK seems to know how to handle the music time machine with performing skills on guitars’ riffage, laying down a mix of stoner rock/ doom tunes, peppering with 70s’ keyboards and leading by a sludgy bass line that reminds of the mighty SLEEP. There are so many bands out there, that have adopted this specific music style, trying to imitate the ‘BLACK SABBATH & co’ but, unfortunately, result in failure, being a cheap, indifferent imitation and nothing more. GROAN is one of the 3 or 4 exceptions in this rule nowadays, confirming what I just said.

“The Sleeping Wizard” is the debut effort of GROAN and the acoustic result is amazing! The main ingredients are heavy and catchy riffs in every song, a talented vocalist which took a header into some 70s hallucinogen blend (influencing his voice) and a lot of inspiration of course, that overcomes the hackneyed formula that we are used to listen to from many stoner/ doom Metal bands. Every single track serves a dual purpose in this album and the highlight is definitely the self-titled “The Sleeping Wizard” that is placed penultimate, leaving the scepters of dominion to “Ancient Space (Master Of Time)” that closes the album in total doom-ness, playing that killer, SABBATH-worshiping riff during the 4 minutes. “Alright now” a voice just said and the ghost of Ozzy Osbourne His Majesty just disappeared among the thick, English and purple (!) fog. The album’s 27 minutes belong to the past history. That’s too soon, you know. Or not? You see, there are no fillers here.

Which ancient myth just awakes the ‘Sleeping Wizard’? Or, he is still sleeping? Hmm, I don’t think so; witches, demons, kings and others apparitions of the misty forests are always out there and waiting to catch their helpless victims; a ‘groan’ in the woods’ twigs is enough for you to be caught. Especially, this GROAN and the spaced out medieval heavy power fuzz rock they play.

    • Phew, that she longed to return here. Work and travel associated with it currently prevent me from taking the time to write on the blog with the regularity and dedication you deserve, but try by all means that at least has a new post weekly. Many are the disks that build up in my head as candidates to be reviewed, and it is not easy having to make a choice, much less when it is forced by circumstances beyond me. The arguments are varied selection, especially when they share a quality level as high as we are enjoying in 2010. Today I opted for the novelty of one of the coolest debuts this year that is routed to an end. Groan are a British band of stoner / doom with an unbridled love for Black Sabbath, the joints of marijuana, witches and dragons. With a lineup consisting of people who call Mazzereth (vocals), Thor's Hammer (drums), The Forest-Dwelling Creature Fuzz (bass) and The Wizard Riff (guitar, keyboards), one and get an idea of where shots go. Initially created as a personal project of The Riff Wizard, suddenly requested the assistance of guitarist Mazzereth (Battlewitch, Ratz Azz, Trebuchet) to give voice to his compositions. Seeing that reached the same size, did not hesitate to add the project to other members to provide Groan of a more solid structure. Despite his short career, and have shared the stage with bands like Lord Vicar, Invasion or Witch Sorrow. The Sleeping Wizard sees the light of the hand of a label also debutante Doomanoid Records.

It's nice to know there are bands like Groan out there. Combos absolutely oblivious to the world around them, living in a world where it is always 1970, the atmosphere is THC and biscuits are cooked lysergic acid base. A land where the huge Woodstock that has become their society is ruled with an iron hand by Black Sabbath, counting as ministers Blue Cheer and Rainbow. Proto-heavy of a stratospheric level is displayed by the British quartet, condensed into seven themes that become instant anthems that will make you dance and make your pitching like crazy. From 100% Iommi riffs that are the leaders of this attack sound, Groan added to your proposal, and quite rightly, touches of psychedelia, progressive rock classic and density of the best Cathedral. But all this subject to the creation of some cuts with the immediacy as a flag and calling hits implicit in all of them. Not The Sleeping Wizard work sensibly analyze, and therein lies its greatest asset. We talked about heavy gritty, which does not need mast*rbation technique or ridiculous, because it has everything it takes to make a great record: mammoth riffs and unbeatable melodies. The voice of Mazzereth is the perfect "retro" perfect an album like this, with this tuning so characteristic of the seventies bands, especially those of psychedelia. Difficult it becomes to highlight issues in a near-perfect record in all of them, but if cuts like Witchy Woman, Deadly Omens, Sleeping Wizard or Ancient Space (Master Of Time) will not lead to org*sm, is that you never liked the heavy metal and therefore deserve to be locked in the deepest secret bunkers for your study and vivisection. The production also looks at the 70's as a reference, and no different from that found in the classic Black Sabbath, which in a job like this is another point in its favor. The only downside to The Sleeping Wizard, horrible cover apart, is its short duration. Its seven songs and 26 minutes of footage I do muuuuuuuuuy short, although it is true that the simple solution is to give the play again in an endless loop of joy rocker.

The truth that I have little to add to an album that I listen to so sick for a month and I doubt I ever tired. Another of the big surprises of 2010 and an album to put on the shelf next to our 70's classic.

      9.25/10
