Dulur Gris The Night of the Living Dead Workers

/incoming/dulurdead.jpgDulur Gris, a trio from Italy, are doom noise sludge chaos, with clear anti-capitalistic fires burning a fierce rage which fuels this music. It is infectious.

The title track contains a long, static-scarred and on message vitriolic sample to lead in, followed by unhinged sludge noise, barely held together by a low and loose bass. The vocals absolutely creak through the mire, the whole thing completely stripped down, but covered in this lo-fi fuzz-rawness that suits it perfectly. The simplicity proves an effective medium to worm its way into your brain.

They have this happy knack of just flipping the dial ever so slightly so a track gathers a brief moment of momentum that feels weirdly euphoric. They never relent from their message, through the lyrics and samples - including one I recognise from Blade Runner 2049. Artificial Heaven slows it down, into sludge of absolute filth, the additional, guest vocals add welcome variance, but equally impassioned. They end with a Dropdead cover - At the Cost of An Animal reworked to replace 'Animal' with 'Worker'. It is three times as long as the original, as you'd expect when doom covers hardcore, especially as they warp the sounds so it comes on like a bad trip comedown - and yet still is the fastest track on the EP.

I was instantly fond of this, despite the fact there's nothing revolutionary in here, except its lyrical and thematic call to arms. It's doom stripped down to just what is required to get that message across, whilst still sound fucked up and sweaty, noisy and sludgy.
