I'm going to see if I can get my album out on Shellshock or similar. Worth a bash I reckon, would be nice just to see it in shops.

But yeah, Bigcartel and Zimbalam are my main recommendations for doing it yourself.

      Zimbalam look cool.

For selling CDs and t-shits big cartel are great. Posting stuff yourself is a bit of a pain in the arse though. I would recommend buying some scales, buying sheets of stamps and avoiding post office queues.

      :D

T- Shits! Typo of the day award:D

    • I get the impression Code 7 is pretty easy to get a distribution deal through and they're part of Plastic Head. Our first EP was through them and the next one will be as well (different label though). The first EP ended up available through a whole bunch of online sources such as Amazon, Play and shit loads of others around the world throught the distribution deal. I've even seen it available from Tescos, WH Smith...etc. I'm not sure how they work it, I guess it's advertised on a shit load of sites then if someone orders a copy it gets dispatched straight from the distributor. I'm only guessing though. the only thing is it's still not likely to end up in many shops unless people go into the shop and order it...and why bother when you can order it online and get it quicker. I think distribution for shops is largely a waste of time unless you're producing significant quantities to have it in all shops and have a budget for a significant promotional campaign to back it up

Big Cartel is good. It is a pain having to do all the postage yourself but at least the money comes directly to you and you can monitor the amount that goes out...no embarrassment if it sells out and people still keep ordering as you can set the availability.

Would you be interested in a really detailed write up? I may do one for the blog or just here. I'm happy to give stats on sales/downloads etc. Hit me up if you've got any specific questions as well.

That would be great as an article on here I think, could you do that?

Yeah that would be cool. There's no problem with it going on here and on my blog.

    • No, just make sure you put a link back to the article on here from the blog.

    • What's the general consensus on digital downloads?

Pay a fee upfront and take 100%, or go for the free to upload but then only get 90% back?

I'd guess with the numbers a typical 9hz band deal with, the latter would be more cost effective?
    • WickedWesticleWickedWesticle
    • I have no real preference because the numbers are so small.

If you sell downloads direct (Bandcamp) then you keep it all apart from any paypal deductions.

Just read the Zimbalam FAQ and this service looks REALLY cool. One off payment, 90% royalties and you can choose which stores to distribute to and you can set your price. This will be within the individual store's pricing ranges.

They don't offer the stupidly huge range of stores that some other places do but I doubt anyone would buy this kinda stuff from anywhere other than iTunes, Amazon, Play or 7digital.

That's all you need really, and Spotify

I'm not sure how those places work though, how will people come across your (relatively unknown) band? Does it work on a "if you like this, you'll like these" principle?

Yeah I think that's how iTunes works at least. I'm not really sure about the others. I doubt many people would use that kinda place to find new music though.

I think it's good to have your music in these major stores because some people have a preference for where they buy their music from (I think Mr Reznor may have said this in that article you linked). If someone hears about you and wants to buy your stuff it's good to have it in the places they may like to buy from and not just on your own site tucked away somewhere. 7digital is the click to buy site on Spotify so that's kinda goes hand in hand there.

      What band/s you in dude?

    • When it seems to relatively simple to get your music on to all these sites for next to no money, it seems daft not to.
