Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas

What's your opinion on this one? As far as I can tell there's only one good song on that, the only decent Mayhem album I've heard is the weird one "A Grand Declaration Of War".

I think that band are a case of reputation > music.

Every track is awesome! Although it is the only album that's listenable from start to finish. I'd have quite liked to see them with Attila in a couple of weeks but I didn't know anything about it.

I need to re-evaluate it, Funeral Fog is the track I'm thinking of, the rest just blend to nothing as far as I can remember, Darkthrone > Mayhem easily.

    • Hard to Swallow- s/t CD (comp. of 7"/ comp/ demo tracks- I'd forgotten how ace they were)
Eyehategod- In The Name of Suffering
Bolt Thrower- Realm of Chaos (complete with obligatory multiple repeats of World Eater)

    • You got that Live In Leeds 10"? Absolutely brilliant. I was born too late to go and see all the quality UK sludge/hardcore bands.

I've literally just started getting into this kinda thing. Picked up a Mayhem live album from 1999 and am really into it - some ridiculously huge riffs, punk rock rhythms and bombatisms behind the kit!

      Also today:
Fu Manchu - Go for it Live (to make it feel like summer when I was walking through the snow)
      Metallica - Ride the Lightning
High On Fire - Blessed Black Wings

    • Pete, check out Darkthrone for definate, also good black metal in a similar style: Fen and Taake, Mayhem started it, but others really overtook them quick!

You might dig Meads Of Asphodel as well, black metal but with all sorts of Hawkwind influences and psychedelic shit.

By all accounts, the new Meads of Asphodel is absolutely mad.

Much prefer new Darkthrone and catchy melodic stuff like Nifelheim and Watain, rather that than endless dull blasting.

Depends how early and how Norwegian - 80s stuff with actual songs is the best. That said, this morning in the car:

      1349 - Hellfire. Go, Frost!

    • i have a long car journey with my new boss of 1 day. i reckon a diet of merzbow, skat injector, cementimental and whitehouse the entire way should sort the men from the boys.

The Whitehouse classic 'I'm Coming in your Ass' on repeat would be a good test of the new boss' nerve.

All the talk of BM has rubbed off on me so I've been playing:

Darkthrone: A Blaze In The Northern Sky/ Under a Funeral Moon
      Mayhem: Deathcrush
      Burzum: Hvis Lyset Tar Oss'
      Anaal Nathrakh: Eschaton
      Bathory: Bathory

That will do me for a while. I only dabble occasionally.
