Let's build more cafes!!!! That's what we need, many many more cafes!!!

Its this mentality that makes England a boring place to be. I'm proud of our steel heritage & it should be emphasised more today than ever before.

      Nor did I.

Those cooling towers are my Sheffield landmark and have been since I was a kid. It's the '10 minute marker' going up the motorway when I was going to see my grandparents.

who's going to want to be sandwiched between the M1 and a load of poo?

You can't call Rotherham a load of poo, that's racist.

I personally couldn't give a monkeys about the towers, but I can see how they've got sentimental value as a landmark. I don't think they're particularly ugly, especially in the context of where they are, but, on the other hand, neither do they have any architectural merit that would make them worth saving.
I'd like them to put a glowering statue depicting industrial oppression up in their place.

    • the highways agency said they couldn't do anything snazzy (that may not have been the actual term) to them as it would distract drivers and become a hazard.
    • Big SiBig Si
    • This wouldn't distract people. It'd be so big you could see it from at least 30 miles away, so you'd have plenty of time to prepare yourself.

    • Well, I hate to echo the neanderthal comments on the BBC site, but I will miss the towers. They're a landmark for Sheffielders and Rotherhammers and they do give you that brilliant "almost home" feeling towards the end of a long journey. At the same time though, I can see every reason to pull them down. They aren't doing a useful job and in the long run, they are at risk of collapsing, which could be a disaster given the supposed poor design of the viaduct, and they are, let's face it, ugly. Also if E.On plan to use it to supply non-fossil fuel energy for our region that can only be a good thing. The site is useless for housing, parks or offices as it's destined to be permanently filthy and smelly due to being between the M1 and the Blackburn Meadows sewage plant, so why not use it to bring new, modern and most of all useful industry back in the shape of this proposed biomass station? Moving forward is not a bad thing and it's not like a massive change... there was once a power station there and again, there'll be a power station there, complete with it's own new shiny cooling towers. So really, it's not that bad. That said, I will miss seeing them there, and I will feel like something is missing as I drive from Rotherham towards Sheffield.

One thing I don't get though... people say they represent the industrial past of Sheffield, don't they know that every coal power station in the world has almost identical cooling towers? Go up high in the hills near Stocksbridge on a clear day and you can see like 7 or 8 stations with identical towers with the naked eye, so they're nothing special really, just big and close to stuff. I personally agree with Si that a huge statue should be erected in their place. Something absolutely preposterous like a giant colossus of Jim Bowen straddling the M1, that would be ace.

    • I can't see the fuss.
they are huge and ugly. Iconic my arse , what about all the amazing old mills and cutlers buildings that have perished around Matilda street?
And as for the constant ' its a sign that I'm nearly home ' comments , I tend to find the signs telling me I'm nearly home e.g.' Sheffield 3 ' are the best sign to tell me I'm nearly home , that and the half mile long viaduct with meadowhall and a sprawling city behind it are a bit of a give away.
Never understood this obsession with the steel industry. Whats to be proud of?
Thousands of men worked torturously hard in incredibly dangerous jobs , raped the local landscape and all for a pathetic wage whilst steelworks owners made millions. Go Sheffield!
When the sewage farm next to it has been there 70 years will that be an icon too?
I'm astounded that something so dull and lifeless can make people all teary eyed and nostalgic yet whne we lost the Matilda social centre to a bunch of corrupt property developers nobody gave it a second look.
It's still EMPTY 2 years on.

    • I think they should commemorate the towers with life-size statues of the towers as they were, on the spot they were built, as a permanent reminder.

Can never tell with you, you like arguments too much ;) :lips:

The steel industry says to me that at one point, people had skills & there were jobs available. Also Sheffield steel provided great resource to soldiers in WW2, housing & work, all be it shitty, to people who would otherwise have struggled. The towers aren't a hallmark to that, they should go but nothing useful will come of it.

They may be ugly but they were iconic.

They're gonna be replaced with a homogenous retail park or something that no-one will ever give a second thought to.

      I'd take ugly anyday.

Like someone says on the link they are like sheffields answer to the angel of the north, and a lot of people find that ugly. The tinsley area of sheffield was the heart of the industry not that long ago, i remember travelling through tinsley in the early 80's as my aunty lived in wincobank, it couldn't have been more industrial, times change but we shouldn't forget the past and the heritage etc. Given that at the side of the cooling towers there's a massive bridge for the M1 i don't see how removed the towers will improve the area that much. But then i don't live near to the towers so i don't get to see them that often.

Thousands of men that took such pride in their work that what they produced was universally recognised as the best in the world. Sheffield being synonymous with excellence sounds like something good to me. A strong work ethic is nothing to be ashamed of. Back then most people had fuck all and to have the respect of your peers meant a great deal. Yes, they were taken advantage of, but they didn't bellyache and bitch - they just did the job as best they could. The advent of unions also improved the pay and working conditions on offer: eg in the 50s and 60s a steel worker made roughly three times the weekly wage of a miner.

I'm quite ambivalent towards the cooling towers' demolition. I'd like to know definitively what will replace them.

Aye, until they formed unions and started launching mass industrial action, eh bud?
