    • These ugly things

will finally be demolished next week and I for one couldnt care less , in fact I'm quite looking forward to it after all the wanky campaigns to save them.

    • If they'd have thrown some lottery money at some local art folk to paint them up nice or done something useful with them like turn them into prisons then they can stay... as it was i never understood the big deal.

The towers should stay where they are. They are a landmark and mean a lot to myself and my wife.

    • I think it's a shame.

    • I can't get over Sheffield's obsession with ugly to be honest. People in Sheffield get attached to some horrendous crap.

They are ugly, ugly, ugly and should have been ripped down long ago.
    • PodgePodge
    • i doubt they'll blow them up like they did the flats but i might pop down to see them go.

sheffields obsession with ugly comes from the fact that a LOT of sheff was a proper slum for many, many years, and although with hindsight things now look crap, when they went up they represented froward thinking and major change. guess who's been reading the industrial architectural history of south Yorkshire.

plus they are probably going to be replaced with some naff quick build offices or warehouses. rubbish replacing rubbish.

i totally disagree, it's all perspective and I'm glad Sheff doesn't just attach itself to traditional standard acceptances of what is and isn't something to be treasured to be honest.

    • They may be ugly but they were iconic.

They're gonna be replaced with a homogenous retail park or something that no-one will ever give a second thought to.

      I'd take ugly anyday.

    • Bugger iconic. Sheffield steel city is dead.

Let's build more cafes!!!! That's what we need, many many more cafes!!!

keep them up they are a monument type thing

      :argh:

It's a shame but if they're structurally unsafe, what can you do?

    • Are they the ones with the nice flourish round the top? I like them. Cooling towers are awesome.

      True dat.

    • I don't like that place, I got lost from my parents in the car park when I was wee, and I cried

    • You want a cafe to be built the other side of the M1, nip over for a coffee?

I'm being faeceececetious but i think we need to retain identity, most cities are identical these days.
    • Tino InsanaTino Insana
    • I want them to stay. I agree with a couple of the awkwardly put comments on't BBC, they represent being back in South Yorkshire, and what is finer than that?

But then, I didn't want the giant silver Avesta Bull to go either...

backing on to a sewerage works too. i never understood the idea of redeveloping that area, who's going to want to be sandwiched between the M1 and a load of poo?

"Sheffield City Council gave E.On planning permission for a £60m new biomass power station that will generate enough electricity for around 40,000 homes"

Guessing that's going on the same site?
