Loudest Band in the World

    • I remember that Sheff gig also, it was bizarre.

I once fell asleep with my head against a speaker during a Mistress set. Proud memories.

    • I passed out during Blue Cheer at Roadburn

      Swans and MBV

      Swans are/were obscenely loud.
When they toured Children of God in 1987, apparently half the gigs were cancelled due to fears of their 27K rig doing structural damage to the relatively small (and sometimes upstairs) venues.
There was a lot of wincing at Supersonic last year, especially when the vocals kicked in. Pretty nasty.

    • It was a bit much at the end of the weekend, but if they'd started it, everything else would have been weak.

Sound is always incredible at Supersonic.

    • I still don't get it with Swans.

      Loudest bands I've seen:
Sunn0))) at Supersonic 2009 - could feel my hair shaking.

Gojira at Manchester Club Academy - at one point I thought someone was standing on my foot, but then realised it was the volume pushing my shoe on to my foot. Facedestroying.

Metallica at Leeds 2008 - So loud it was like being on stage with them. I was about 150m frm the stage.

    • Diet Pills at the Old Angel in Notts the other week were making my ears kill even though I had foam earplugs rammed right in there. It's like they were being challenged to blow their amps.
    • OllieOllie
    • I saw Onslaught at the Hippodrome in Bristol in 1989 and they destroyed my girlfriend's ears for about a month.

    • Think there's a few, Sunn at Supersonic 09 was loud for sure, but think Venetian Snares after was louder, could hear him over the throb of Scorn in the other stage, insane. The high end killed my ears, the tick of the snares and cymbals he had in his samples.

Manatees at the Yorkshire House was ridiculous, you couldn't hear yourself speak downstairs, three flights of stairs away and through about 4 doors!

    • What about Slomatics at the Red House, Mike?

Their soundcheck made me feel ill.
    • mikemike
    • Wasn't that at the Cricketers? They were the only band Anne ever asked me to turn down!

Yeah, that's what I meant to say... whoops.
    • BenBen
    • I've never seen them, but aren't My Bloody Valentine supposed to be ridiculously loud? Remember hearing about a live review for some big magazine in the states just being "Fuck you My Bloody Valentine".
    • mikemike
    • Yeah apparently when they toured loveless, people were leaving after vomiting.
    • basstardbasstard
    • I read something in The Guardian about punters getting permanent hearing damage/ loss after the MBV reunion gigs the other year.
I do like a loud gig but permanently fucked ears = a step too far.
