What's everyone's opinion of the latest Kylesa album, Spiral Shadow? I didn't 'get' it for a while and thought they'd lost something in trying to (i) reach a wider audience (ii) spread their wings (iii) evolve (depending on your cynicism).
But I've forced myself to listen to it over and over, as I believe they're the most important band around within my realm of taste. More so than the 4 other active bands I hold in as high a regard in this sense, unless Clutch return to form - Black Cobra (gone off the boil as of late); Beehoover (too niche and undeservedly unknown); Witchcraft (of their own style); and Torche (admittedly close but Kylesa shave it for me).
And it has grown on me. I'm really 'getting' the album now and enjoying it's expansiveness. It's not all great but the middle trio of 'Drop Out', 'Crowded Road' and 'Don't Look Back' are brilliant listening.
Fully agree, every single album they have released sounds massive and I love the vocals. That song following [i[Don't Look Back[/i] is pretty good too, the one with Laura Pleasants singing. I always think this band has a really good thing going with her and Philip Cope on vocals, they seperate their parts so much and never repeat each other. They use completely different timing and it's always with amazing lyrics too. I find myself singing along with their albums after only a few plays usually.
I'd debate whether it's new though Pete, came out two years ago!
Haha, well yeah, I'm still listening to it loads two years later among newer stuff so it must be good. Have you heard Tombs? A little heavier, but same sort of vibe. I'm ashamed to say I've only got their first album

No, I'll have to investigate. What's the album called?
Winter Hours is the first one, they have a blasting drummer, but not in a black metal way, it's hard to describe, the opening track is worth it alone, looksee here.
Not got Spiral Shadow, but Kylesa are an essential band, and very under-rated, even now in my opinion.
Sorry but I can't agree on Black Cobra "going off the boil". Invernal was my album of 2011, and although they've ditched some of their trademark vicious fuzz, they've upped the ante wth amazing song-writing and ferocious guitar-work.
Re Black Cobra - they haven't got near close to Bestial since, in my opinion, but bearing in mind how amazing that record is, they're still great. I just didn't love Invernal like I hoped I would.
I really like Kylesa; they've got the right balance between keeping an identifiable sound and developing as a band.
Having said that, I still pick the 100 Degree Heat Index EP or their side of the split with Cream Abdul Babar most frequently; the punkier edge to these ones tips it for me.
To be honest I haven't played Spiral Shadow as much as I probably should- it's overdue another spin.
