Yob - seen them a few times, always liked them but inexplicably haven't listened to them on record. What's best to start with?
Boris - I love me some Boris, and seeing them in a Salford chapel is possibly my favourite gig ever, but it depends on their musical mood as to how they sound. I've got Smile and Pink (which I both love) but also had Boris/Sunn 0))) which I, let's say didn't. What should I check out next? Heavy Rocks? I've just realised typing this I bought the Ian Astbury / Boris cd recently but haven't listened yet for some reason, I'll put that on shortly.
Illusion of Motion is supposed to be a great Yob album, not got any but like what I've heard.
Avoid Absoluego, Amplifier Worship and Dronevil if you don't dig Altar, and don't even try New Album (2011) as it's just J-pop, really puzzling.
Walrus/Groon collab with Merzbow is really good, one track is a drawn-out cover of I Am The Walrus by The Beetles. The Sun Baked Snow Cave collab is also really good, retains the heavy riffs but infuses it with weird crackly noise from Merzbow (think people make the mistake thinking Merzbow just produces static and harsh stuff all the time).
For Yob I'd say The Unreal Never Lived, The Illusion Of Motion and Catharsis are the top tier personally. The newer ones are really good too but those three sit together really well they were recorded one a year over a three year period and the band are just on fire.
Yeah, those are definitely the three to start with. Newer ones are good too, though. Headphones and a spare hour will help appreciate them all the more, phenomenal band.
Not much I can offer in terms of Boris as I've only got the same ones as you. I hear you on Altar - man, what a snore fest!
Yob - I've only been into them for about 8months, but they've become my new favourite band very quickly. The illusion of Motion was my start point and I think sums up what the band are all about. The Unreal Neved Lived is their masterpiece, but I'd start with Illusion. Catharsis rocks but is impossible to get home of as a physical, and the two new records rule, but need the context of the earlier stuff. Just buy it all basically!
Aye Boris can be pretty hit-or-miss these days, to my tastes anyway.
Definitely go with Akuma No Uta, Heavy Rocks and Pink for the riffy shit, much better.
I'm not a fan of 'drone' typically at all, but I really got into Amplifier Worship, just because the dronier songs do actually build up to something (eventually), rather than just 'pure' drone, and there's a couple of more 'regular' sounding riffy tunes on there too. See if you can find the song "Hama" for a taster. Amazing recording too !
Saw Yob at Roadburn this week. They played two sets, the first was The Unreal Never Lived in full, the second was Catharsis in full. Both absolutely destroyed, yet in slightly different ways to each other - these guys are destined for greatness.
i have few of Boris album , Pink ,Rainbow, Altar and a pop album which i still haven"t got my head round , i have not had the chance to go and see them live, but i think they must be a must see , i have a live DVD where the drummer keeps screaming between tracks and keeps standing up like Lars , also he looks like a weird Michael Jackson lookie likey impersonater , but putting that a side , i would want to see them .
Yob ,i have not had the pleasure yet !
