Redundancies

    • Monday's going to be a weird day. I've been given a heads up that redundancies are going to be announced, and officially my job is on the line, but it's not really. They just have to say that as the other paraplanner (that's my job title) is going. I've got to have a meeting with my boss and the HR boss and put on my best 'shocked' face and I might shed a few fake tears!

    • My work place (Paragon Labels) is making redundancies.
Originally it was meant to be 90 but after loads of meetings and cost cutting ideas etc.. think it only aound 70 now, 24 of which were voluntary.

We've lost our £10 a day holiday pay, time and half is now time and a quarter and if you do shifts instead of getting £50 extra a week, only be getting £30.
Be no annual pay rise either.

Still ot a job (i think) so can't grumble too much.

    • Theres been a few at my place but they've done it in such a way that nobody has had to actually leave under duress, it seems they've retired about 5/6 people who were close and paid them off with nice final payments, thats the way to do it, not mass firings!

    • Well ASDA are apparently taking on new staff and its about time to cos we're fucking straining to get done what we need to and we're meant to be a store of learning!
Got a letter from my unon aswell and they're trying to get us a pay increase.
Unfortunatley I can't see it happening as there arn't many people in the union in our store cos they all can't be arsed paying the pennies it costs a week.
I kinda hope there will be a strike so I can stand next to a burning oil drum with a plackard calling people scabs cos it makes you look cool, but then I don't wanna leave all my mates on the department in the lurch or lose the pay. Early days yet mind.

    • I'm thinking about packing one of my jobs in.
It's starting to eat into my free time and that's worth a lot more to me than money.
I've not really felt this current recession , if anything , I have more money and feel more positive than usual.

    • teachers are generally alright but teaching assistants are being really screwed over. 5% pay cuts for every single one, according to the lastest council bulletin. that's restructuring, though, not the depression/recession. is it a recession yet?

    • It is a recession, it became official last week. I'm not sure when a recession turns into a depression, though.

    • Yeah its actually a recession officially init, the only thing we have noticed is a lack of advertising revenue, motoring and property are what fund local papers so some of our editions have been small with very few ads but it seems theres quite a pickup in property happening again due to the rental market, so its all relative.

    • The company where I've been temping since June 2007 is having a meeting on Monday where they're going to announce mass redundancies. Rumour has it that most of the casualties are going to be the highly-paid Directors and Associate Directors. I bloody hope so, most of the ones I've dealt with are utterly fucking useless. The person I worked with was on contract and they let her go on New Years Eve so I've been working flat-out doing both jobs since then plus working extra hours I don't get paid for as they capped my hours to 35 a week three months ago. I'm hoping that I'll survive this round.. Wish me luck.

    • good luck Linda. I seem to be ok as our company is keeping its head above water and we're also picking up a lot of work that not so fortunate compaines have left behind

    • We had a few redundancies before christmas (3).

Basically, the management dragged the whole trust into a room (I refused to go as it was my day off so I got a phone call), threatened every single person in the organisation, said if you haven't heard by this time you're probably safe and then gave us very few updates.

I am still seething about it. Appalling lack of respect or tact.

    • Things are pretty grim at my company, we all took 15% paycuts (gasp!!!) and they start interviewing for redundancies mid Feb. I'm now insured up to my eye balls in case I get the sack! (well my mortgage will get paid, which was a big worry)

Good luck indeed Linda, and everyone at risk!!

    • We're all at risk: if not immediately then in the next 3-6 months, I reckon. Fuck, even pubs aren't doing well, so you know things are fucked. Civil unrest is starting already. I've started stockpling food and am now shopping for a gun.

MsT: please read the fine-print on your insurance documents asap

    • I sit and wait.

I have a feeling things may be put back as news has come in that one of the directors, that has been off sick long term with depression, drove himself into a wall at the weekend. Nice.

    • ^^^Blimey, that's bloody harsh^^^ Hope things work out OK Mamba. For my part, the meeting to spread the bad news was postponed untll tomorrow because of the crappy weather.

    • It did all happen today. Was a weird place to be. In my department it was more of a formality, but another 27 people (out of about 60) were told there jobs are at risk including a couple of relative bigwigs.
