    • in celebration of the fact that i have been on holiday and actually got to do some proper reading!

the suspicions of mr. whicher - kate summerscale: historical study of a victorian murder investigation. readable and interesting.
the camomile lawn - mary wesley: trashy ww2 sex novel. fun.
twilight - stephanie meyer (?): awful generic vampire novel. now a must-avoid film, i'd imagine.
never let me go - kazuo ishiguro: actually made me cry. always the sign of a good book.
homicide - david simon: a bit like reading the wire. and makes some of it make more sense. anyone read the corner?

    • I thought ' Never let me go ' had very weak ending and not Ishiguro on form at all.

I'm currently trying to find time to finish :
      John N.Gray -
Straw Dogs: Thoughts on Humans and Other Animals
Dylan Thomas - Under Milk Wood (phoenix version with a brilliant introduction)
Fuzz One: A Bronx Childhood - Vincent Fedorchak

      I read
The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman by Bruce Robinson
      and it's really enjoyable. Recommended!

in what way did you think it was weak? i can understand you not liking the book, i don't think it has the narrative complexity of, for example, when we were orphans, but the ending was in keeping with what i thought the story as a whole was trying to say, and i found it very understated and moving.

what do you consider his best work?

    • Read the two Karl Pilkington books in a day, fun read but he isn't prolific.

Starting the Olivetti John Peel ramblings soon, and I'm going to go and buy that new Bill Bryson Shakespeare book.

    • I just finished 'Behind The Scenes at The Museum' by Kate Atkinson. Fucking miserable as sin but really interestingly written. I've not read a book that managed to encompass 4 generations of a family, in detail, and still be gripping before.

Now reading 'Human Croquet' by the same author. Just as depressing but really, really uplifting at the same time.

I'm also reading The Highway Code. Fascinating stuff.

I got a book called 'L is for Lollygag' from Santa. It's a book of mental words and their meanings. I was very chuffed as lollygagging is one of my favourite words, as well as one of my favourite things to do!!!

    • Just finished The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, which although slightly daft and very long (for me), was brilliant and full of historical intrigue!

Now reading a complete history of the Knights Templar.

It's well good. Vlad the Impaler and an army of vampire librarians? Ace.

    • With a baby to look after I've been struggling to read anything lately...got halfway through Making Money by Terry Pratchett then half way through the last Harry Potter book so now I'm reading the latest Classic Rock magazine!!!

One I can recommend is Company of Liars by Karen Maitland. It's set in the days of the Bubonic plague about a group of people trying to outrun it and they all have secrets. Very intriguing book.
    • MORRELLMORRELL
    • Russell Brand- My Bookie Wook

      Lovin' it.

    • Myriad art books and David Starkey's new Henry VIII biog. It's epic.

    • i have just finished black butterfly, vesuvius club and the devil in amber by mark gatiss, which are all brilliant.

i also just finished bad vibes: my part in britpop and it's downfall by luke haines, which was as acerbic and self-referential as i expected and thouroughly engrossing.

i am plodding through a book of tom waits' interviews and articles, which is the closest to an autobiography there will ever be.

going to get to work on my southern pacific phrasebooks soon.
