    • I've just been reminded of this band this morning, I used to be well into them, not in a gothic way, never wore corpse paint or new rocks boots but well good I reckon, I know they are one of the most hated bands perhaps ever, but I'm watching videos from the period I was into them (Midian, Bitter Suites etc) and I still know most of the words, scary.

Its actually quite funny watching them, the cod-horror is just laughable but I still think some of the songs are amazing- Lord Abortion, Cthulu Dawn, The Forest Whispers My Name, Cruelty Bought Thee Orchids, Black Goddess.

I used to have a few albums and a DVD, sold them all but two, but haven't listened to them in ages.

I think all their music is undone by what a chump Dani Filth is, little wanker.

    • Wtached them live once, very good entertainers on stage but musically it just grated me.

    • Cant stand them. I always thought they were taking the piss.

    • Saw em in Stoke the same night that Germany knocked England out of Euro '96. Was a cool gig.

I think they're alright. The first album, Vempire EP and Dusk And Her Embrace were pretty cool but went off em soon after that.

    • Met Dani Filth in Rock City once. Had a bit of a chat with him. Seemed like a nice guy, really down to earth. Never been into their music, though I can see the appeal as some of it's quite melodic.

he used to have a column in metal hammer didn't he?

i remember the "banned" issue of kerrang! with him on the front covered in blood in cruciform pose. my mum saw it in my room and stopped me from buying the magazine for 2 FUCKING YEARS!!!

don't know what any of that has to do with what mike said...i think i was gonna say something about it but lost my train of thought.

thankyou. i'll be here all week.:s

    • I used to write to them many many years ago but they started sending stuff with faux nazi imagery on the letterhead and I kind of lost interest in them. I had a copy they sent me of their very firat demo recorded on a 4 track. It was ok. I don't mind some of their music but the vocals just sound like some kind of shrieking weasel. I ended up trading the demo with a mate for a Reef album as he's a huge COF fan and I couldn't be arsed to buy the Reef album.

    • I still own copies of 'Vempire' and 'Dusk and her Embrace'. All sounds rather cheesy now, but I was well into them when I was 17-18.

Luckily COF proved to be the gateway drug to some some good black metal, which I discovered after hearing them... like Emperor, Ved Buens Ende, Ulver, Solefald (first 2 albums)

    • My ex was well into them. One of the most hilarious and surreal things I've ever encountered in a relationship was coming over to her uni halls to comfort her when her parents split up and finding her blubbing like a child with 'Bitter Suites To Succubi' on full-blast. :s

    • they were and are shite, well compared to Bathory and Emperor, but then most things are

    • I don't get black metal. It all sounds really tinny and the vocals are so high pitched only dogs can hear them. Plus COMPLETE LACK OF GROOVE.

      There endeth the lesson.

That's always been my problem with black metal. Show me blastbeats with an actual beat and I may change my tune.

    • Mayhem's 'Deathcrush' has some great groove
Darkthrone have a bit of it too, but with a more punky edge

I have a brilliant mental picture of Si wearing a pair of those.

Cradle of Filth aren't bad. I think they're bulletproofed (their early albums, anyway) for the memories of being a 13 year old black metal kid. Dusk... ANd Her Embrace is a stone cold belter in anyone's money, though.

    • I could find you a pic of my mate Sean, who looks like a taller version of me and has a pair of New Rocks with flames on them.

Ben, listen to Dakrthrone, they have doom riffs all the way through "A Blaze In The Northern Sky" and the production is so that it sounds like you are listening to it in a FUKKING STORM WITH ICE, SNOW AND DARKNESS
