      <u>Load Of Noise - Issue 6</u>
Load of Noise is a UK (Manchester) based B&W fanzine crafted in the true cut & paste style. The genres covered range from Sludge, Doom, Metal, Post-Rock, Grind and Power Violence. The zine has been going since 2005 and there's been six issues so far. I take pride in the cover art and try to use artists who have played an important roll in the underground such as Tom Denney, Eric C. Harrison and Scott Stearns. I've put on two gigs to promote LON and I also sometimes work with the legendary Future Noise Promotions.

Issue 6 - Unearthly Trance, The Sword, Fistula, Atavist, The Freezing Fog, Saviours, Magrudergrind, Among The Missing, Bastard of The Skies, The Sleeping Shaman, Volition & more.

      <u>Eyehategod - Preaching the end time message</u>
From the early demo of 'Methamphetamine' to the newly recorded 'International Narcotic,' '36 Beers and a Ball of String,' and 'Turn Troubled Tables,' EHG have let nothing stop them, whether it be god, guns, drugs, death, weather or the police, these dudes will persevere and struggle, it seems that they do not know or care to do it any other way. Seems I was all too wrong when seeing them five years ago and thinking 'man, I bet one of these guys is gonna be dead soon, or at least this has to be the final tour.' For what I see now is still a bright future and hopefully not even that fat bitch Katrina will get in their way. This record and all that helped make it over the last 16 years is the true sound of hope struggling to get out from under the rock. If ever there was truth in music, Eyehategod is bringing it.

      <u>Hemorrage - The Kill sessions</u>
Spain's masters of medical mayhem return with ten fan chosen cuts all recorded together in January 2007. As all the great bands from years past ala Napalm Death, Bolt Thrower, Carcass etc... Haemorrhage has decided to record some fan favourites live in the studio but instead of calling it the peel sessions they chose to call it The Kill Sessions. CD, LP, PICTURE DISC each have different cover artwork.

      <u>Frongskin / Taunt - Split</u>
Finally this nasty, alcohol imbued and drug-abusing cluster bomb is OUT NOW! Each band one song. While both playing the same style of dirty, grooving sludge, they still emphasize their own approach and blend.

Taunt with a monumental, 1 riff based but very varied song that crumbles every piece of dope. Foaming with rage, Frogskin on the other hand blow out a rumbling blast of a song, spitting acid in nearly 8 minutes.
While Taunt are self-destructive and desperate, Frogskin concentrate on suffering, pain and anger.

Both smashing in the mud as hell, so fasten your seatbelts!

      <u>Criminal Element - Career Criminal (Double 7")</u>
Make a mental list of your top 10 all-time favourite Death Metal bands. Done? Good. Now tell me that CRIMINAL ELEMENT doesn't posses a member from at least one of these bands. This supergroup boasts among its ranks members of SUFFOCATION, DYING FETUS, CATASTROPHIC, VITAL REMAINS and PYREXIA. Needless to say, those are some big, big names (well maybe not CATASTROPHIC, but the others are).

What CRIMINAL ELEMENT have to offer is just under 19 minutes of poorly produced yet fairly satisfying Death/Grind of the very oldest school. Dirty chugging riffs, an assload of grooves, flurries of blasting Grind and a dual vocal attack of scream/growl alternation are the fare. Add one absolutely ball stomping, and I mean ball-fucking-stomping riff at the start of the title track and you've got yourself a slice of fine Death/Grind pie.

Some simple instructions for fans of SUFFOCATION, ASSUCK, NAPALM DEATH and TERRORIZER: Look at the album art in this review. Look at the 'Buy Me!' button below it. Click that button.

      <u>Brutal Truth / Total Fucking Destruction - Split 7"</u>
This split 7" sees maniac drummer Rich Hoak doing double duty...neither of these bands need any further introduction. This 7" features each band's contribution to the Emetic Records Eyehategod tribute.

      <u>Covenance - Ravaging The Pristine 7 "</u>
Formed by formerex members of DYING FETUS (Vince Matthews-vocals) and MISERY INDEX (Bruce Greig-Guitars, Matt Byers-Drums), COVENANCE is a brutal Death Metal band from the US. Alternating between mid paced chugging atop speedy double kick and Grind intensity blast beating, this is (only!) 8 minutes of neck exercise I sorely needed. The guitars are thick and clear and the bits of clean channel they throw in two of the songs make for a great contrast to the heaviness. Vocals are low growl to mid range. pretty standard DM voice but good and hostile.

Stylistically, it is firmly entrenched in American Death Metal territory, having much the same vibe as HATE ETERNAL (and Erik Rutan mastered this) and a number of other USDM bands. This is the only thing about the disc that brings it down a bit: COVENANCE doesn't really bring anything new to the table and the very short demo nature of this doesn't give a true picture of how a full length would stand up to repeated listens. Liking the style helps to alleviate some of this for me (yes Metalcore fans, I am a hypocrite) and I wouldn't hesitate to check out further work by the band.

The title alone is worth a point with me! 'Ravaging The Pristine' brings all kinds of bizarre visuals into my mind and I love it; definitely album title of the year material. Even if it was called 'Demo 2005', it would still be worth putting on your check-out list.

      <u>Monarch / Grey Daturas - Split 12"</u>
Two respected underground heavyweights pair up on 'Dawn Of The Catalyst'. Australia's Grey Daturas have built a solid following over the last few years through constant touring worldwide with artists like Neurosis, Wolf Eyes and Yellow Swans (having also released splits with the latter two). Their combination of Sonic Youth style guitar-improv freakouts with more detuned doomed ambience and all out noise has attracted fans from all dank corners of underground music. France's female-fronted Monarch is that country's entry into the slo-mo nihilistic utterly oppressive doom genre where they've distinguished themselves from their peers in both sound and aesthetics. On 'Dawn Of The Catalyst' each band contributes one extended track, both veering to the more experimental, droning, lurching side of their collective personas. A split to be felt more than simply heard, it requires full volume and full bass frequencies for maximum effect.

      <u>Nostromo - Ecce Lex - 12" </u>
The audio equivalent of a serial killer. Underestimate it for a second and you're dead.

Mix in equal parts Grind riffing, Hardcore breakdowns and high pitched screeching, turn it all up to 11 and you get NOSTROMO. It's an extremely volatile mix and it has to be handled with care, otherwise it will just come out as one giant mess, snubbed and ignored by all factions, but when done properly, it will be embraced by all and well, NOSTROMO got it right.

A high-pitched tone starts, not unlike the small drizzle that gets on your nerves, but also serves as a tornado warning. Sure enough, "Rude Awakening" more than lives up to his name as it erupts into a savageness that is rarely met. Even a track like "Sunset Motel" which is infused with a high dose of melody, at least in comparison to their other tracks still has a thick, heavy layer weighing down over it. Instead of it being straight out brutality, it just weighs you down over the course of the track.

There are a couple of shorter interludes to help break up the chaos into more manageable sections, such as "End's Eve" and most of "Turned Black" and I can appreciate the effort that is put into that, but ultimately it doesn't really help the disc any and often times it can kill the momentum that they had building. Being the extremely aggressive band that they are, though, NOSTROMO are able to rebuild that momentum and push it even further, so I guess this wasn't much of a concern on their part and hey, they're nice little interludes.

More than just your average crossover, NOSTROMO blur the lines with their ferocious Hardcore/Grindcore attackHemorrage - The Kill Sesions
Spain's masters of medical mayhem return with ten fan chosen cuts all recorded together in January 2007. As all the great bands from years past ala Napalm Death, Bolt Thrower, Carcass etc... Haemorrhage has decided to record some fan favourites live in the studio but instead of calling it the peel sessions they chose to call it The Kill Sessions. also, i now have the A horse called war repress back in stock. get them while i still have them because everyone loves this band and they are picking up press and fans like magnets pick up paper clips off your work desk, or some other metaphor, expect an interview in the upcoming issue of Bad Acid and on the Cosmic Lava website.

speaking of Bad Acid, Slomatics and Agent of the Morai are also booked in for a centre page spread (oh, er, missus) also in the upcoming issue of said magazine.

on Friday, you can check out Jesus of Spazzereth and Mondo Cada, both Calculon signings at the Raven's creed gig in Nottingham at the old angel. the JoS CD and tape, yes tape, a First for us, should be available by the end of the month. the Mondo Cada CD should be due fairly soon, they have a few issues with art that they need to iron out first.

also by the end of the month, this flows well, i should have the UFO Gestapo CDs, if you liked AHCW then you'll like UFOG. blistering French sludge infused hardcore.

oh I've uploaded some more vids too on both the myspace and the facebook.

lastly for now, keep the first weekend of August free. the good people at 9hz (www.ninehertz.co.uk) are putting on an alldayer in London. its going to slay being that not only will there be a load of bands covering the whole stoner / doom / sludge spectrum playing for your enjoyment but they have a load of artists putting on a poster show at the same time in the same venue. plus I'll be there selling stuff cheap cos i need the beer money.

this is what people say about them

Resurrected for the third time, Jesus Of Spazzareth finally present us with their first release 'Kill Him, Kill The Blasphemer' after 4 years of trying, courtesy of Calculon Records. For those not familiar with the band, a couple of members of Bumsnogger started a fun hardcore mob, but were plagued by the joviality and sometimes sloppiness that inhabitated early gigs. Coupled with a revolving cast of drummers and bassists, left them cast in a not so favourable light at times, despite their best efforts and raucous gigs.

However, things are looking up, with a settled line-up, new songs and more serious approach. Mainly dealing with the d-beat, old school hardcore with a filthy sound, a polite nod to thrash (check out the guitar solo that opens 'Stab Twist Kill';), and topped with a rock 'n' roll swagger, Jesus Of Spazzareth dish out 12 tracks that have been trimmed of fat and excess, and get to the point. The 2 vocalists approach works well with both having distinctive voices, and it's great to hear the English accent come through, when many favour to ape that of our friends across the pond. Lyrically, a wide range of subjects are covered including social issues like drinking, friendships and the d.i.y music scene, and also broader issues like military history. Intelligent stuff, indeed. The use of well-chosen samples at the start of each song lighten the mood in between the slabs of raging hardcore too.

A sterling d&eacute;but effort that buries the ghosts of Spazzareth's past, and deserving of a spin on your CD players.

A HORSE CALLED WAR Stumble at Every Hurdle (Calculon)

Gimme the sludge man. And if you’ve been missing the corrosive and incisive sounds of Eyehategod and, if you’ve dug a little deeper, Iron Monkey, I can’t do anything else but recommend you this young UK quintet. Stumble at Every Hurdle is a five song EP (following their first Ep We Ain’t Proud of This) that like some of the Iron Monkey material is made of massive songs. “Son and Heir of a Mongrel Bitch” isn’t just a great song title, in the hands of this quintet this sludge epic moves from mid tempo to slow-motion to dead tempo and then picks back up again and then dies again and then sort of turns itself into a different song that sprints and dies back and forth for two more minutes. All this with a guitar sound that is hair-raisingly electric and vocals that channel distorted images of tragedy. Sure thing; about eight minutes later you are ready to give shit up or run for the door.

No joke. Like most high level sludge, A Horse Called War create challenging music. It is not to be taken lightly and it is not for the weakling, the lighthearted or the Charlotte Church fan. Albums like this are especially designed to punish the listener, to lock him into submission. Ultimately though, Stumble at Every Hurdle lacks the most engaging aspects of any of the Iron Monkey recordings. During the first three songs this band gives its best to unleash distortion and slow riff after slower riff of pure discontent. “Live to Loose” is a welcomed change; it’s got speed and several breakdowns. And it maintains that tiring pace for a good two minutes before it turns into nightmarish and perverse doom. Definitely challenging.
