Rob Smith says:
Its a sad time to be skilled in anything. Those who have got jobs in a sector like graphics, audio, or something specialist are clinging on to them for dear life, despite some pretty shitty changes in the money & contractual side of things. Whilst those out there are who are losing them have nowhere to go but customer service jobs. Now I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, because one of my 3 is a customer service job shoveling shit in the Cinema. But it smacks a bit when you've trained all this time to end up back at square one. I've got nothing but sympathy.
I think I'm lucky with my job as it's kind of using a range of different skills in a fairly specialist area within a fairly large company. So I do graphics, video graphics, editing and all sorts of different things involved with making sure images can be played out onto large screens at concerts but luckily our company also hire out the screens, cameras, video systems and the crews so there's always a demand for that. I think the recession has hit us but the good thing is that people still love to go and see big gigs even when they don't have much cash as its a bit of an escape. We're lucky that we don't work in quite the same way as some other people in the graphics world. I have a friend who does freelance motion graphics and he's still not having any trouble finding work but he is very good, I think a few of the people who maybe don't stand out from the crowd might get a bit lost.
Im very grateful to have a job and especially doing a job I enjoy and seriously glad I started in the industry several years ago before the current climate hit.
