Oh Dear

I'm on about the same income on the dole and housing benefits as I was in a normal week at work.
What upset me was the awful way I was treated , I got 5 days notice and nothing in writing and no apologies.
I was told over the phone too which is very cowardly and they also cut off any contact between us and other branches as soon as they'd told us.
It took 2 weeks for anybody to put it into writing and sort me a P45 which made starting the benefits process very difficult.
I also got no redundancy pay.
I do like not working but I don't like being treated like a piece of shit.

Yeah that sucks. Apparently they're giving people a month here to try and find a job in one of our other companies (we're owned by America) and then a month notice. Seems rather generous to me.

    • I had a serious chat with my lady last night abut training to become a social worker. I’ve also made an appointment to see the doctor to get some advice about my mental well being…that sounds intense but it’s not :) Certain things have held me back over the years and I want to get them sorted. Talkin’ bout lack of writing and grammar ability….heavy man :). I’ve been noticing a link to the aforementioned and learning to drive. Something is not working twix my brain and hands and it’s bringing me down.

      …anyway..rock and roll eh?

    • i think you'd make a great social worker. i've been sseing a doctor for my mental well being for ages now, it's ROOOOOOD! she's a sexy, sexual little baby woman doctor who hands out the sweeties without asking too many questions.

    • Its a sad time to be skilled in anything. Those who have got jobs in a sector like graphics, audio, or something specialist are clinging on to them for dear life, despite some pretty shitty changes in the money & contractual side of things. Whilst those out there are who are losing them have nowhere to go but customer service jobs. Now I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, because one of my 3 is a customer service job shoveling shit in the Cinema. But it smacks a bit when you've trained all this time to end up back at square one. I've got nothing but sympathy.

That is pretty shocking, I complain about the normal stuff in our job but they have a really hard time getting rid of anyone and they're required to do it in a half decent manner.

I think I'm lucky with my job as it's kind of using a range of different skills in a fairly specialist area within a fairly large company. So I do graphics, video graphics, editing and all sorts of different things involved with making sure images can be played out onto large screens at concerts but luckily our company also hire out the screens, cameras, video systems and the crews so there's always a demand for that. I think the recession has hit us but the good thing is that people still love to go and see big gigs even when they don't have much cash as its a bit of an escape. We're lucky that we don't work in quite the same way as some other people in the graphics world. I have a friend who does freelance motion graphics and he's still not having any trouble finding work but he is very good, I think a few of the people who maybe don't stand out from the crowd might get a bit lost.
Im very grateful to have a job and especially doing a job I enjoy and seriously glad I started in the industry several years ago before the current climate hit.

Ditto. All 3 of my jobs are safe considering my skill set. College are keeping me because i'm the only person who knows how to deal with all the music equipment there, & i recon i've done a good job so far.
The cinema don't sack people who are good & show enitiative. Also, a bit like the gig thing, despite the price people will still travel there to watch films because its an escape.
My crewing job is so casual its not worth thinking about too deeply, but there will always be gigs & so a call for crew.
Like yourself i'm lucky to have landed when I did, just as the credit crunch hit for me. Problem is, they don't pay enough to help me get over my overdrafts. Which sucks considering i've been out of uni now 3 years.
