Unida confirmed for Desertfest

    • DanLargeDanLarge
    • You certainly didn’t see that coming did you!! Well, it’s true. Not only have DesertFest already reunited both the mighty Dozer and Lowrider for 2013, but we are now proud to announce that desert rock royalty Unida are Camden-bound this coming April to headline Desertfest 2013.

I’m sure you all already know the story, but that isn’t going to stop it being told over again… Upon the dissolution of Kyuss and Slo Burn, the voice of the Californian sands John Garcia (vocals) hooked up with Dave Dinsmore (bass), Arthur Seay (guitar) and Miguel Cancino (drums) to add their biker punk-metal rhythms to his unmistakable, paint-stripping bluesy grooves behind the mic. Despite huge early promise, a glorious debut album in 1999’s ‘Coping with the Urban Coyote’, a storming split with Swedes Dozer and a follow-up record due with American Recordings in 2001, the band stalled and sank back behind the cacti’ shadows. The long-awaited second album, reportedly entitled ‘The Great Divide’, was never released; Dinsmore left the band to be replaced initially by Scott Reeder and then later Eddie Plascencia whilst Garcia concentrated more exclusively on his new band Hermano and some solo work. Unida was certainly left in-need-a’ something… until now!

Back to blow us all away with the likes of ‘Wet Pussycat’, ‘Human Tornado’ and ‘Black Woman’ plus a whole lot more, this is one pick-up truck full of hulking riffs, fuzzed up overdrive and classic vocal majestics that you simply can’t afford to miss. Get ready to cope with the triumphant return of the urban coyotes themselves at DesertFest 2013!

    • Am I the only person who is utterly non plussed by Unida. Kyuss were ok, two good albums, one patchy one and one shite one. Queens are ok, one awesome album, two good ones, one that's meh and one that's fucking deadful and then John Garcia...if you took all the stuff he's been associated with since Kyuss you may get enough for one decent album, two at a push. I have Coping With The Urban Coyote...listened to it maybe 3 times and each time couldn't remember a single song as soon as it finished.

Hmmm. Ok? Good? Patchy? If you think that of some of the cornerstone albums of the genre, it's no surprise you find lesser lights like Unida a disappointment.

I saw Unida many years ago (a decade?) in the Hop and Grape at Manchester Univeristy - it was an amazing gig. I was sat next to a bare-footed, bear-like Scott Reeder in the student union beforehand (didn't dare say anything to him), and then the gig had a happy vibe - with a dstinct hazy smoke filling the room... I think Khang supported as well if my memory (aka geeky list of gigs) is correct.

Anyway, good work DesertFest - I like Urban Coyote but still listen to their Dozer split every now and again more often.

I'm of the unpopular opinion that Kyuss did no wrong and I'm not even the biggest stoner fan really.

QOTSA are pretty untouchable as far as I can tell but yeah Unida were a bit of a departure for me, this will be good though, wonder if he's going to do some new albums?

When Blues For The Red Sun came out I thought it was great and has one of the best opening couplets of songs on an album ever. Sky Valley was decent but a bit long winded in places but the next one, apart from a handful of decent songs was pretty much a band running out of steam. The first album has a couple of decent moments on it but is mostly cack.

The first Queens album was pretty cool but Rated R is the one for me...I will admit that it's one of my favourite albums. Songs For The Deaf though...has some great songs but again a bit long winded, it could have been shorter. When they kicked out Nick Oliveri they lost their balls. Lullabies is ok but Era Vulgaris is awful. Most of John Garcia's stuff though I find to be stoner by numbers for the most part. I prefer Hermano to Unida...it's got a bit more of a vibe to it.

The Mondo Generator album, Cocaine Rodeo...that's the album to have!!!

I will admit though, I find most stoner rock pretty dull, especially the Kyuss worship stuff.

    • I think all the Kyuss albums bar the first one are pretty rad, Circus has some amazing stuff on it.

Of the later Garcia bands I think Sloburn and Unida are pretty great. Unida has that more raw edge to it, I wouldn't even say it was that stoner really, it's just hard rock.

    • Are you mental Ollie! It's friggin' Kyuss!

Urban Coyote is a beast of a record and John Garcia was great when I saw him in London a couple of years ago - still sings like a motherfucker to his credit, even though I don't agree with them doing Kyuss or whatever they're called now without Josh.

Love everything Queens have put out, yeah they new stuff isn't as heavy but its weird and wonderful in different ways.

And Dan - yep, Wretch is awesome!

Maybe Pete, maybe...just don't really float my boat...don't even have them on my iPod anymore.

    • I'm just gonna take the middle ground on this I think. ...and the Circus Leaves Town is one of my favourite albums, by anyone. I've got Sky Valley and Blues for the Red Sun but I've hardly listened to them, they just don't seem anywhere near as good.

I've not heard Unida but that's not a deliberate avoidance or anything, I like Garcia's vocals on the whole.

      ...and I can't stand Josh Homme's vocals so I don't like Queens.
