    • Right, this has been bugging me for ages and I need to sort it.

I have a shed load of mp3s on a USB hard drive and I need some way of playing them on my hifi.

Does anyone know of something that will let me do this with out having to spend a fortune.

I've looked into media (HDMI etc) players and they look like they might work but there are a million and one options. Gareth thinks he saw a bluray player that had a usb input at the back so that might also be something but we already have a dvd player and no blueray so its kinda buying something that we don't need.

anyway, what can you lot suggest?

    • Not sure if USB would deliver stuff in that good a quality, I just use a gold-tipped input jack from MP3 players/laptop to my stack when I want to listen to things properly, so I'm probably not the best person to ask.

    • MP3 player isn't big enough and my computer is pretty much dead plus its a pc hence moving it all to a USB hard drive.

I had a tvix box which seemed to be ideal but it was faulty and new ones are far too expensive.

USB would transfer the data, which is digital, so will be exactly the same quality as the original MP3. The quality of the digital to analogue conversion is what's important, which for cheaper devices might not be as good as it could be.

I've not tried anything in this arena to be honest, most of the music I listen to these days is on a laptop at work or my iPod through headphones.

    • Further to our chat last night (in bed), have a look at the Panasonic DMP-BD77. It's a blu ray player buy has USB inputs and says it lets you "share" and presumably play music files. It's networkable too.

As for cables, you only need to worry about high quality cables for analogue singals. Digital signal is either 1 or 0 so it'll work or it won't, a £5 HDMI cable is as good as a £40 one. But cheaper.

    • I've got cables coming out my ears thanks.

I'll check that player out but still on the lookout for something a little more dedicated.

    • Something like this maybe here

    • Yeah that should work by the look of it.

    • I just need to find one with an ok review and I'm onto a winner
