UFO GESTAPO S/T Review From www.deafsparrow.com
(Calculon)
Oh, la la, I dig greatly the way in which this Gallic trio mix their nasty, hazy and thick as molasses sludge with out of this world kinda psychedelic and pretty fucked up noise. I am not even sure which instrument is being used (is it a mellotron?) to create these spacey vibes, but it saturates the music greatly and gives it quite the original feeling. Then again, if it was all about originality I’d give UFO Gestapo a very good grade. The truth is, it is not all about originality. It is also about musical quality and this trio doesn’t show much on that front, leaving us with the bitter taste of unexploited grand potential.
Yeah, there are those not so fleeting moments when tunes like “Landing Above” seem to fall into this deranged and nightmarish groove. It’s cool. The ideas are very cool, but the end result needs work. Not polishing, just more work on the songwriting. With volumes competing at such ridiculous highs the vocals of the unfortunate named Kkk get buried amidst tons of rubble and debris. That may be intentional, after all, with everything else that’s going on I am pretty sure the lyrics are more of an afterthought.
The second half of “Fear Weed” is also stellar, sounds like cavemen stoner rock meets astral post rocking guitar playing. The distortion is overbearing. I like that. Then again, even those cool guitar patterns are so buried, it’s almost a disservice to the band’s genius.
By the time UFO Gestapo get to “Peace Crap” they’ve trashed the space noise and have become a rustic combo of obese electricity. The core of their music is showing, the sound is natural. There is still a lot going but that’s because the guitars are not only played in typical fashion, but they are also flagellated, extracting of them the type of noise that Thurston Moore was so good at a few years ago. Regardless of the finished product, UFO Gestapo have stumbled into a winning formula.
i will, lighten up sweetcheeks.

Deaf Sparrow Blood Island Raiders / Sourvein - 7" Review
Aaaahh, the 7-inch. As a youngster in South America I could only read about the influence this format had in the development of underground music. Unlike 12-inch vinyl, 7-inch never even came close to dying during the heyday of the Compact Disc. It was always another viable, affordable and durable way to get the word out there and the songs on it for all eternity. Here are some notations on 7-inches I have had the pleasure to receive. Read on and spread the word...
The nice blokes from Calculon Records out in England really know what they are doing. They’ve put out some killer sludge in the past and I have their release from UFO Gestapo waiting in my car to be reviewed. But now is the time for this split 7 inch between North Caroljna’s Sourvein and the UK’s Blood Island Raiders. Most of you should be familiar with the first band. They are a nasty bunch that’s been getting down since 1996 and their song “Black Cloud Revelations” shows them in all their gritty, obtuse glory. The riff barely moves. It’s simple and basic. It’s too fat to go anywhere and the vocals are so low and disgruntled, we are just waiting for them to go postal. They never do. They just retort and do the twist on their own place. Blood Island Raiders sounds like a ballerina blues band in comparison. Not sure what I mean by that? Me neither. All I know is that there are some bluesy guitar solos, that there is melody in this song (“The Phobia&rdquo and that the drummer sounds awake. I also know that the vocalist is the odd man out. His voice may be the most distinctive factor of the band though.
Dear all,
My good friend and former band mate in Bumsnogger has started his own label. Which Hunter Records is a “pay what you like” download label, I believe he’ll be doing a few snazzy DIY CDs too but only when demand dictates. Anyway he’ll be releasing some of the sold out Calculon Records releases as alongside brand new stuff.
His first release is a Bumsnogger Anthology with unreleased & demo extras.
Check it out here www.witchhunterrecords.com/
As for Calculon Records, the distro is still open and active for feel free to pop along and have a browse but I’ll not be releasing any further new music for the foreseeable future.
