Considering getting rid of cds and ripping it all

    • OllieOllie
    • My dad's vinyl collection is a huge inspiration...first pressings of the first 2 Rolling Stones albums, original hendrix singles, loads of old blues stuff from the 60s, 70's soul, original ska 7" from ther 60's. If he'd got rid of it all my musical education and influence wouldn't be half what it is now. Thos lumps of plastic have shaped all my future listening especially as Sunday mornings in our house were given over to putting records on. I must have spent hours sifting through his collection, taping stuff...etc.

    • Actually my dad is a fucking legend. When I was 12 he let me stay up late to watch a Quo gig on TV...I was hooked. The next day he took me into town and bought me a Quo album. He used to come home from work having gone to the local record shop with new singles for me to check out like Iron Maiden...etc. Some of my vinyl is not only extremely rare (Cathedral single put out by Ultimatum Mag!!!) it also has a lot of sentimental value. I did have to sell a whole load of stuff a few years ago when money was really bad. It was one of the most heartbreaking things I've ever had to do.

    • Ok Im just going to keep it. My Dad actually seems into the idea of building a bike for me, so I'll just have to work hard and find the donor bike. The music stays

This is all you have to say to convince anyone not to let there collections go.
Jack , either one of your choices of bike are going to leak lots of oil.
A Bonny would suit you as you seem to fair with the white scarfed british biker , film for look visuals and bikes . B-movie - 'The Restless'

    • I'm all for keeping your music collection, for me there will always be something distant about digitally stored audio. I like being restricted to one album, and just having the choice on the computer means that i often switch between bands and the flow of each record is lost.

I do however believe that the CD is a dying breed and vinyl will outlive it for its collectability and rich sound. The reason i say this is that i think physical media such as CD, DVD, blu-ray, vhs etc will become obsolete in tandem with internet speeds increasing and more people switching to computer based multimedia systems which store data on a harddrive and can access any media through online stores and the odd bit of piracy. This is a fair way off yet but seems like the way things are going to go.

I think books and vinyl are safe though as no matter what conspires there's a market for both of these things; there's no way every book ever written will be transcribed online and no digital audio reproduction can match a record cut directly from the analogue tape recording.

For this reason i'm looking to swap my cd collection for a vinyl one.. anyone that fancies a vinyl for cd swap get in touch, although i have an inkling no-one's going to get back to me on that one!

    • oh yeah lots of oil leakage, my dads AJS is a right pain for that, he strips it down and rebuilds it all the time, still leaks haha He got someone to fiddle with the engine a while back though so it may be better next time I see it.
Can use a jar to catch the leaking oil and pour it back in again after a ride, got to love british engineering

    • Harley's are the same, many have the redundant cat litter tray underneath catching oil .
My brother is a bike man , he has Harley/BSA/Triumphs and some vintage 40s bike, that was 5 years since( he has some cash mind ) i last saw and spoke to him,
he loves the ACE cafe as well.

    • Stuff the music, it's all about the bikes. I keep thinking I'll turn mine into a streetfighter but I don't have the secure space to work on it

    • I agree with Ollie, Sean and Mambo - Dads are usually where it starts and I will fucking love the day my son starts digging into my CD collection and starts appreciating that music isn't just something on the radio during the middle of the day. I think that this is harder achieve with a PC library - though still do-able.

My Dad has all the Zep and Deep purple I could ever want and weened me onto it gradually, alongside more modern stuff like Foo Fighters.

If anyone has lists of CDs for sale, I'll happily take a peek!

    • I stick stuff on the ipod and play it in the car...my daughter has got into Aerosmith and Kiss that way, loves a bit of Clutch too and keeps asking me to put the Beatles on.

    • One of my mate's says his proudest moment came when his 5-year old son asked him to put Master of Puppets on in the car.

Not that I know of... But I will one day, even if I have to do a King Henry VIII and have 8 wives in the process...

And I intend to beat Mamba's mates record and get him to request Master of Puppets whilst still in the womb.

Holy Crap! 5 years old and demanding MoP! That's soooo metal! :)

    • I see a time when I stop using CDs as a medium, but I've had a resurgence since getting a car, I have about 30 old albums in there I've not put on for ages and it's great to revisit some of them.

Fear Factory- Demanufacture has been one of the best, still sounds modern!

A brilliant metal record. They did it proud on the recent tour - didn't play anything from it within the show, then unleashed five mighty tracks as an encore!
