I don't like magazines, they are the devil's work. Well, music mags are anyway.

      Why's that then?

I've found loads of good bands through reading music mags.

Oh, now I have to put it into words and it's not necessarily a rational thing. There are many things I am irrationally negative about.

HOWEVER, I tend to find music journalists to be infantile and opinionated and so don't like the majority of their reviews/articles. Plus, music is pretty personal and other people's views taint my own. Which is very arrogant I know, but hey...

    • if it wasn't for 9hz, i wouldn't know about gentlemans' pistols.

and THAT, my friends, would be a crime.

when i was young (ergo, poor) i used to buy label samplers as they were very cheap. i remember buying one from crypt which i picked up by chance for about £3 and it was fuckin' ACE.

had bantam rooster, ten pound hammer, los assdraggers, beguiled, new bomb turks, the wyld, lyres, cheater slicks, country teasers, etc.

Terrorizer, which has been my source for years now and a magazine I have defended for a while, has become less relevant to me (or gone downhill..?) over the last 6 months or so.

Gigs, ninehertz forums, myspace and stuff sent through for review for ninehertz are my main places.

Terrorizer doesn't hold my interest much to be honest, the reviews are obscurely written and pretentious and the re-readability value isn't great. I still buy it though for live reviews, if it looks an interesting mix of articles, etc. but it covers too much dull extreme metal for me. The free CDs on the cover almost never have anything good on them either. I actually think Kerrang! is better written and more thought out.

I learn about new music from gigs I go to [like the all-dayer], support bands at shows that surprise me, sometimes the forums here, the Hellride forums, sometimes Myspace as well.

I used to get free CDs with my brekfast cereal as a kid from time to time and one had a Muse song on it...

    • I know I already write for it but Rock a Rolla has some brilliant stuff, the newest copy just came through the door and I honestly can't wait to read it, 4 pages of Mogwai feature, loads of reviews live and album and the back page has a Hey Colossus interview!

bought it once...far too cerebral for me. like wire but with good bands.

i mostly looked at the pictures. i found it way to precious about noise acts and "sonic sculptors" that i couldn't really give a tinker's tit about. i understand people do like that kind of stuff but i'm not so fussed about an article intellectualising a man hitting a computer keyboard with his cock.

having said that...reviews pages are like a new shit bible so i should shut my fucking vagina.
