I really want to get our album on Spotify when it's out later this year but at the moment it's not looking good for independents. The only service I'd consider using is CDBaby and they are going through some shit at the moment to say the least. Anyone else managed it?
Spotify users access one of the fastest growing catalogues of licensed music in the world. Music fans get to enjoy their favourite artists showcased in a high-quality application that’s a delight to use. The net result is an unparalleled user experience and a compelling legal alternative to piracy.
Promoting your music on Spotify is free. Your own artist area allows you to build a direct relationship with fans, old and new, across the world. Develop revenue streams through the sale of downloads, merchandising, concert tickets and more, as well as earning a share of the revenues we create through our advertising and premium businesses. Powerful, granular, in-depth reporting is available to participating labels and artists.
We are constantly adding albums and tracks to Spotify and want to offer our users all of the music in the world. We aim to release an uploading platform relatively soon so that content owners can partner with us easily.
As Chris implied, its all major label stuff at the moment, but looks like you will be able to upload your own stuff in the not too distant future (maybe).
Can you explain it a bit more. I don't understand what spotify is or what the issue is with getting music on there.
It's a music streaming platform that you can use for free if you don't mind the odd advert or pay a tenner a month if you don't want the adverts. You've really gotta try it to 'get it' but I'm of the opinion that it's FUCKING AWESOME. It's missing a lot of underground stuff at for now but there's certainly enough obscure music to keep me happy.
A very(!) rough description would be that it's like using iTunes over the internet and your iTunes library contains nearly all the music in the world.
