Alot of working class people these days couldn't give a shit about unions, some of the opinions i heard about the recent strikes proper fucked me off.
Which is just what Thatcher onwards wanted. She succeeded in undermining society while making us think we've never had it so good... we are wealthier than ever but theres a dark shadow lurking underneath (see: knife crime, dissallusioned kids, record anti-depressent scripts etc.)
Community is being degraded and individual wealth is king. Local post offices and pubs are shutting, money is flooding out of the local economies and trickles back to us at 6 pound an hour.
I have a huge bee in my bonnet about these issues and could rant for hours.

Yes, the attitudes to recent strikes have made me very sad. I seem to remember a number of people on this forum were very anti the tube strikes.
The middle class theory I mentioned earlier is absolutely about individual wealth. Thatcher, Blair and middle way politics are everything that's wrong with this country and has been wrong with this country since the 80s.
It's all very saddening and what's more saddening is the lack of people who give a shit. Which in itself is symptomatic of the power of individualism in keeping us fucking happy/sedate.
The point I was trying to make with my last post is that the unions of the nationalised industries did wield quite a bit of influence for a time and the members weren't picking cotton on the plantation feeling good about being heroes, if you get my drift.
I agree wholeheartedly with what Jen and RedStars are saying. Labour had to basically abandon socialism in order to regain control of government. Makes me think of St Vitus - Born Too Late. It's going to be interesting to see if they try and take away free healthcare within my lifetime. The NHS is the last great cash cow to be milked.
Anyway, I have derailed this topic long enough. I am going to find a nice place with my friends to watch the towers be demolished and have a drink for them.
